Important Considerations:

Before you choose, consider these factors to help you decide:

  • Dairy Sensitivity:
If you're dairy-free, your baby may not have been exposed to much dairy. Begin with a gentle formula like Holle cow milk to test for any reactions.

  • Feeding Type:
Looking to supplement occasionally? Opt for smaller packaging like a Holle box, which is more practical as large cans must be used within a specific timeframe after opening.

  • Cow or Goat Milk:
No known allergies or preferences? Both cow and goat milk formulas are great. Goat milk is closer to human breast milk and gentler on the stomach. Check if your goat milk formula includes a probiotic to prevent constipation; add one if it doesn't.

  • Pre/Probiotics:
Hipp Stage 1 contains both but might be intense for babies also breastfeeding. If your baby experiences runny stools for several days, consider switching to a Holle or goat product.

  • Protein Allergies:
If your pediatrician diagnoses cow milk protein sensitivity, try a hypoallergic or goat formula. For allergies, a goat milk brand may be suitable. For other conditions like celiac, follow your pediatrician's recommendations. Sprouts brand is a vegan option that's well-received.

  • Reflux Management:
Follow your pediatrician’s advice for managing reflux, such as keeping your baby upright after feeding. For babies over 10 weeks, Hipp Anti-Reflux can be beneficial due to its thicker consistency; you may need a larger nipple size.

  • Spit Up Issues:
Is your baby a "happy spitter"? If so, it’s more of a laundry issue. If spit-up is causing distress, try Hipp Comfort.

Ordering the Right Amount:

Calculate your needs based on daily consumption:

  1. Determine the total daily intake in ounces.

  2. Note that 400g of formula makes about 90 fluid ounces, and 800g makes about 200 fluid ounces.

Example: If your baby consumes 24 ounces daily (6 ounces per feed, 4 times a day), a 400g box will last approximately 3.5 days, while an 800g box will last about 8 days.

Need help deciding?

  • You can try a smaller cow milk protein, like Hipp HA. You can try a different milk protein, like Jovie/Holle goat. If neither work, you can try vegan, like Sprouts. If you need soy formula you are stuck with American choices. Bummer.

  • Older than 10 weeks, try Hipp AR. From birth, try Jovie goat.

  • Try Hipp Comfort, the milk protein is a bit smaller than regular. If you are on Hipp, try Holle. Sometimes the pre/pro biotics are too much. Have you checked your baby for lip/tongue/cheek tie? Have you tried increasing the nipple size?

  • Are you burping your baby throughout the day? Are you allowing your baby to pull away from bottle to burp? If you are using Hipp, the pre/pro biotic may be too much, try Holle or Nannycare.

  • Try a goat milk formula. Try Hipp Pre, HA1, or HA2.
